The DaVinci Minds Legacy and Future
Leonardo da inci was an amazing and incredible individual. Little is actually truly known about him as a person – What he thought, what he valued, what he was really like. Leonardo wrote every day in his notebooks and amassed a very large trunk full of them…An estimated 50 or more notebooks, covering 20,000 to 28,000 pages. When Leonardo was rediscovered in modern times it was found that only six of his notebooks, now called Codexes, and a handful of loose pages survived. What was lost in those missing pages?
On the eve of his death in 1519 he asked his assistant Francesco Melzi to publish them all. Melzi produced the Trattato Della Pittura a manuscript found in the Vatican Library (Codex Urbinas). This work covers Leonardo’s ideas on painting and refers to 18 other manuscripts and notebooks. Of these, only 6 can be found today. What happened to the other 12? And the other notebooks that Leonardo so incessently wrote in? What did the world lose in those missing 44 or more notebooks?
And what exactly was Leonardo trying to accomplish with all of these notebooks?
One of many writers researching and writing about Leonardo proposed the idea that Leonardo was actually creating the first encyclopedia. The first Western encyclopedia was published in 1728 a full 209 years after the death of Leonardo. Did Leonardo envision the first encyclopedia? We think that he did.
